Celebrating Flag Day: A Reflection by Dr. Beth Plachetka
Dr. Beth Plachetka of Safe Harbor Counseling shares a heartfelt story about discovering the significance of Flag Day on the day her son Mike was born. Although she always loved her country, she admits she didn’t fully appreciate Flag Day until June 14th, the day Mike was born. Unlike the flowers and plants with pink ribbons and “It’s a girl” messages she received for her daughters, the arrangements for Mike were adorned with American flags.
Dr. Beth reflects on how the flag has profoundly impacted her family’s lives. She recounts her father, a veteran, sharing stories of feeling at home whenever he saw the flag while stationed away, and how her husband found comfort and guidance in spotting the flag during his travels overseas. She also notes how the flag has inspired soldiers throughout history to fight for what’s right. These memories, combined with the beautiful gesture of receiving flags when her son was born, deepened her sense of patriotism.
The American flag, a powerful symbol, evokes pride, unity, and resilience. It represents our shared identity and values.
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever, and a picture is worth a thousand words,” Dr. Beth explains. Our eyes, described as extensions of our brains, interpret what we see literally, symbolically, and emotionally. Art, including symbols like the flag, can significantly affect our mental health.
